Top 10 Video Editing Software 2011

10. ShowBiz DVD 2

ShowBiz DVD 2 box shot

You can create professional-grade movies with smooth transitions, functional menus and unique sound tracks with the video editing software ShowBiz DVD. This application is easy to use so you can quickly copy and burn videos. However, if you’re looking for video editing software that publishes video to the web or as MPEGs, you might want to look at another application.

The main interface has six options: record from a video tape directly to DVD, capture video, create or edit videos, create or edit a DVD disc, create a VCD disc, and print disk label. The quality of the captured video is just as good as the original footage. We couldn’t see any imperfections such as blurry edges, distortions or pauses.
ShowBiz DVD is simple and easy to use even if you are not familiar with video editing software. The main screen is well organized; there are three "quick buttons" across the top and dropdown tabs for the various effects and transitions you can apply to the video. It gives you a choice of either storyboard or timeline view. You can select specific portions of video for playback. We didn’t have any problems when we installed the application to test it.
This application excels in the number of transitions available with over 330 choices; we especially like the "rain in the puddle" effect when changing between segments. All of the transitions are clean, smooth and very professional looking, and you can time them to fit your music. Additionally, ShowBiz includes 21 special effects filters and 62 menu templates, which is more than most of the other applications we reviewed.
The application has exceptional menu creation ability and even lets you create sub-menus. For example, if you want to put several video collections onto one disk, it can form a main menu then a sub-menu for each specific selection. Additionally, menus are customizable with themes, unique text, chapters, animated thumbnails, background music and images, as well as an introductory video clip. We were slightly disappointed with the occasional video delays we experienced as we panned through the footage, however.
Though there a lot of features for this application there are a few export options. The application is best suited for making DVDs of the files, but you can also use it to upload videos to YouTube. You can also save the files in WMV, AVI formats or even to a VCD. Even with the limited options available, you are sure to find the best way to share your final product on social media sites or any other type of platform.
ArcSoft provides a user manual accessible through the application. They also publish FAQs and tutorials on their website and provide an email address for technical support. This manufacturer does not have toll-free phone support or live chat for instant answers.

Summary

ShowBiz is easy to use, offers a huge variety of transitions and builds some of the best menus for DVDs we’ve seen. However, ShowBiz DVD is not the best product to publish your videos online; if you are primarily interested in producing movies to post on the web, you might want to look elsewhere.

9. Roxio Video Lab HD

Roxio Video Lab HD box shot
The video editing software application Roxio Video Lab HD brings a lot of great features to the table. With more and more of the technology trending towards utilizing 3D, this application is a great product to look into if you want to turn your flat videos into eye-popping masterpieces. We can’t forget to mention the video and image editing tools as well as the comprehensive effects and transitions available. This video editing software application is one you’ll want to check out.
Roxio has had its hand in the multimedia field for more than a decade. With programs geared for those who don’t have years of experience in the field, you are sure to find the applications useful and easy to use without spending dozens of hours learning the basic interface. Just jump right in and start editing.

Video Capture/Playback

Not only can you import files directly from your computer’s hard drive but you can get the files directly off of the camcorder or DVD as well. With all of these options available, you are sure to get the scenes you want so you can work with them in this video editing software application.

Ease of Use

This video editing software is easy to use right from the beginning. Since this is more of a suite of applications, we were pleased to see that there is a main menu that explains which program is used for which purpose. When actually using the editing application, everything is labeled and has enough instruction that it isn’t too difficult to use. One of the difficulties with this program is how functions change depending on which window is open. For example, if you are using the timeline window applying an effect is as easy as double clicking it, but if you are in the storyboard window it works better if you drag and drop it. Overall, this video editing software is fairly intuitive, but there are a few nuances that you will have to learn to deal with.

Editing Tools

There are quite a few editing tools that are available within Roxio Video Lab HD. This video editing software has several tools that come in handy, such as a storyboard and timeline view option. You can also change the aspect ratio, and trim scenes down to better suit your needs. This application doesn’t have as many tools as we like to see, but the ones it does come with are useful.

Export/Production

There are a lot of different ways to save the final movie so you can watch it later and on another device. Whether you want to burn it to a disk or make it an FLV video for YouTube, you have plenty of options. Some of the file export options available for this program include:
  • MPG4
  • AVC
  • AVI
  • DivX
  • DVAVI
  • AAC
  • WMV
With all of these options available, you are sure to find the perfect format you need so you can take your final product with you and share it with your friends and family. Depending on which option you use, will determine how long it takes to save the file and the overall quality of the finished product.

Editing Effects/Transitions

This video editing software application does come with a fair number of effects and transitions. While some of the effects and transitions are not completely practical to use, we found others to be useful. Adding the effects and transitions can be done in multiple ways, depending on the windows that are open. One way to drag and drop, while another you just select the option you want. We were pleased at how simple it was to change the length of time the effect lasts. Overall, this video editing software has several useful tools for creating the effect or transition you want.

Disc Creation

When creating a disc using Roxio Video Lab HD, the process is fairly simple. You won’t have any problems burning your movie to a DVD or even a Blu-ray. While this video editing software isn’t as fast as some applications designed specifically for burning, we were pleased with the results. There are a few features we found especially useful such as the ability to burn the 3D files to a compatible DVD and AVCHD discs. This application is definitely useful when you want to make a hard copy of your finished video.

Audio and Photo Editing

There are a lot of different options when it comes to audio and photo editing. One of the biggest advantages we saw was the ability to stabilize the video. This will help remove the shaky camera look when you import the video from your camcorder. There are a few options when it comes to the audio editing as well. While the sound effects provided by Roxio cost a little more, the option to download them if you need them is valuable. We were also pleased to see that you can import sounds and music you may already have on your computer. There aren’t as many audio tracks available for mixing sound and music, but you can add music, sound effects and a narrator all on different tracks if you need to.

Help & Support

Roxio offers a little help and support for this application. We were pleased to see that there is some information available within the program itself. Not only can you search for various terms but it will give help on the various windows. The manufacturer only has a little help available on the website, though they do provide a support ticket you can fill out. Another location you can go to receive product support is the forums. We were pleased to see there is a little information about the program here and there are experts who can help answer the questions you may have.

Summary

Overall, the Roxio Video Lab HD application is handy when you want to convert a video from 2D to 3D. However, this product is missing some features that seem to be standard with other programs in our lineup. It is one that you might enjoy looking into but is missing a few important features such as creating menus.

8. Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 10 box shot
You can do more with Sony Vegas Studio 10 Platinum than most entry-level video editing software, but it also means it takes more effort to become proficient with it. Fortunately this application has an amazing interactive tutorial system explains what to do and highlights the buttons you need to press. It continues only when you’ve completed a step. It’s a great way for new users to become familiar with basic tasks, and we recommend that every new user the tutorials before making a single video.
When editing video in Sony Vegas 10, you can view your clips in the timeline. This application does not have a storyboard view like other video editing software. Trimming video isn’t quite as intuitive as with other video editing software. Although when you learn how Vegas trims video, or splits video – to use Sony’s terminology – you’ll see how easy it is. Splits are done by playing your video and pressing the S key when you find the desired spot on the timeline. Vegas splits the video at that spot, so you can insert transitions and add effects to the various clips. Another nice feature allows you to place markers on the timeline that translate into chapters when you create a disc with Sony’s DVD Architect. This is also done with a press of a single key.
Of all the consumer level video editing software, this application has the best options for exporting your projects to video files. The file list is extensive:
  • MPEG-1
  • MPEG-2
  • FLAC
  • FLV
  • AVCHD
  • MP4 (for iPod)
  • PSP-compatible
  • MOV
  • RM
  • AVI
  • WMV
  • DV/HDV Camcorders
Effects and transitions are Vegas Studio 10 Platinum’s forte, if you will. With 276 effects, this application comes with the most effects of any video editing software tailored to new and intermediate users. Simply find the desired effect and add it to a clip on the timeline. Once in the timeline, you can edit every effect to change the strength, radius, and just about any aspect thereof. Vegas also has a whopping 201 transitions included, and adding them to your video is easy.
Vegas Studio 10 Platinum comes with Sony DVD Architect for creating discs with multi-layered menus, looping audio, and more. DVD Architect has 44 fully editable menu themes, along with 83 pre-installed buttons and 53 backgrounds. Inserting video and audio is done similarly to Vegas Studio, with a video and an audio track in a customizable timeline. If you marked chapters in Vegas Studio, you can load them in DVD Architect and each segment becomes its own chapter. Again, it’s this kind of flexibility that makes Sony one of the best in video editing and certainly in disc creation. A valuable feature lets you burn HD video to Blu-ray discs without having to upgrade to another Vegas product. But in order to burn Blu-ray discs make sure you have the proper hardware.
Vegas 10 Platinum does not come with a built-in audio editor, but you can still do the most common audio editing tasks like fade in/out, cross fades, volume adjustment, and panning from left to right. If you need a more full-featured audio editor, Vegas Platinum Pro comes with Sound Forge Audio Studio, and a library of 1,001 sound effects.
Sony’s phone support costs money, but email support is free. We didn’t have the occasion to contact tech support, because all our questions were answered by the in-depth tutorials and FAQs. We really can’t say enough about how good the tutorials are, and again, we must stress that if you buy this application spend some quality time with the tutorials.

Summary

Sony Vegas Studio 10 Platinum is the most feature-rich video editing software in its price range. While not the easiest to use for new video editors, the power and granular control Vegas Studio 10 Platinum gives you is unparalleled. You’ll have a more gradual learning curve with other video editing products, but if you plan on editing video more than a couple times a year, mastering Sony Vegas Studio 10 Platinum will yield much greater returns.

7. Roxio Creator 2011

Roxio Creator 2011 box shot
Roxio Creator is a digital media studio that doubles as effective video editing software. This application has a wide range of useful tools including a batch of video editing options a utility that could stand on its own. Everyone from tech-savvy video editors to people with little experience will be able to find something to suit their needs with this application. This application includes a good collection of transitions and effects and the ability to stabilize and refocus video.
This application delves into 3D media, an area that is still unknown to some video editing software applications. With this application, you can create 3D DVDs and transform 2D videos and photos into 3D masterpieces. You can also play back 3D movies on your PC without needing 3D glasses.
This application has a fast video conversion rate and smart encoding for AVCHD. Another feature is streaming video capture. This allows you to plug in digital camcorders and burn content directly to DVD without having to first save data to the hard drive. The encoding time is short and the video conversion quick with one-click video conversion available.
Video output/playback formats include AVI, DV, HDV, DV-AVI, MPEG-1/2/4, MPEG2-HD, DVD-Video, IFO/VOB, XviD, DVR-MS, TiVo, ASF, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, 3GP, MPEG2 Transport Stream, AVC (H.264), and AVCHD. With so many options it shouldn’t be too hard to find one that will work for your particular application. The application also supports the ability to import MKV internet movies.
Roxio VideoWave is the video editor in Roxio Creator. Editing tools in VideoWave are not always easy to find and use, but it doesn’t take too long to figure it out. Creator has an open timeline. This lets you drag-and-drop video, music and effects directly into the timeline. There is also a utility that allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation in a shot. There are 246 transitions, 99 video effects, 37 overlays and 58 text effects available in this program. With this many options you should be able to accomplish anything. You can apply these effects by simply using the drag-and-drop feature to place them in the timeline.
This video editing software lets you export video in several formats depending on how you plan to use it. You can export video files for TV/VCR playback, DVD playback, general editing, playback on another PC, AVC (H.264) and email among others. AVC (H.264) is used to export video that can be viewed on iPhone, iPod and Sony PSP devices. Videos can be uploaded directly to Facebook as well. Another feature in Roxio Creator allows instant drag-and-drop burn access for CD’s, data, ISO and backup.
When you are ready to publish a project to disc you can choose between DVD, VCD/SVCD, Blu-ray and AVCHD. Each of these options offers templates for menu creation or custom options if you want to add your own personal touch. Burning Blu-ray and AVCHD discs requires additional hardware/software that is not included in this suite. Blu-ray disc creation is available using the High-Def/Blu-ray disc plug-in which costs extra. Also, if you want to be able to play back Blu-ray disc’s in your computer you will need the Blu-ray Playback Plug-in which costs extra.
Roxio Creator offers several audio capture and editing options using Roxio Sound Editor. Use this to capture audio tracks through your sound card, CDs, MP3 players and can even to convert your old LPs into digital MP3s to burn on CD. Roxio Creator can create 3D pictures even if they're from standard cameras. The program comes with dozens of new calendars, cards and project templates too.
The Learning Center is where users have access to a broad range of video tutorials, instructional guides and step by step walkthroughs for many common editing tasks. There is also some help available online through FAQs, email and telephone number.

Summary

Roxio Creator might not be specialized video editing software, but it's definitely able to get the job done. No other program in this category has ventured into the area of 3D media. For that reason alone, this program is a cut above the rest. This program is a utility that's good at many things and definitely capable of getting any video editing task accomplished without much worry.

6. Pinnacle Studio HD 14

Pinnacle Studio HD 14 box shot
Pinnacle Studio Plus from Avid is high-end consumer video editing software. The program comes with all of the standard editing features as well as some unique perks, such as the ability to work with HDTV video format and original transitions and sound effects. However, even with a user-friendly interface, Pinnacle Studio Plus is still a complex program. Since it offers so many features, options and customization tools, it takes some time and practice to feel comfortable using the application to its full capacity.
We had no problems installing Pinnacle Studio Plus. As you finish the install, a screen appears and recommends that you view the tutorial, which is approximately two hours long. Without the tutorial, you can still create a basic video, but most users will need the user guide or tutorial to learn all the ins and outs of the application. We referred to help often to learn how to activate and utilize Pinnacle’s many features. It didn’t take too long before we no longer needed the help.
A tool we appreciated in this video editing software is the metering feature, which constantly measures remaining hard drive space so you can avoid maxing out your hard drive during a project. This is also a good way to make sure you have enough space on the disc you want to burn the files to when you are done with the project.
Pinnacle is well known for a feature called SmartAudio. You can choose a music track and set an exact time for the music to run. SmartAudio will stretch or shorten the music track so it ends with the video. In addition, with the vast library of sound effects, you can add humor, fun and a professional touch to your video. While this is a useful feature, we found that we liked to go back through and make sure the music lined up with the video.
This video editing software lets you choose your own DVD menu background, buttons and music. Although this software offers some versatile scene transition tools, Studio Plus cannot animate text. This isn’t a necessity when using video editing software, but it is a nice feature to have. However, you can insert static text.
When you order Studio Plus in a box and not just the download it comes with a Getting Started Guide which goes over some of the basics. We highly recommend reading this first before doing anything with the application. It gives you the opportunity to create your first video in just minutes and teaches you about navigating through the program. Additional help files are informative and easy to follow; we used them often while learning to navigate the software. You can contact Pinnacle's support team through email, live chat or phone support if you need any extra help.

Summary

Pinnacle Studio Plus is a powerful video editing tool and ranks among the best. Though it is a little difficult to learn and there aren’t a lot of filter features, this video editing software application is one that you might find worth looking into.

5. VideoPad Master's Edition 2.30

VideoPad Master's Edition 2.30 box shot
If you're looking for a video editing software application that is easy to use, VideoPad Master's Edition is a product that fits the bill. It doesn't have as many features as some of the other applications, but the price is hard to beat and it is easy to navigate through the available features to get exactly what you want. This application doesn't require you to watch hours of tutorials or read dozens of documents to produce a video to share with friends and family. The biggest improvement we've seen with this latest version is the number of available transitions and the addition of 3D and green screen options.
Not only is it easy to use but VideoPad doesn't put as much strain on your computer as other applications do. Since it's video editing software it is still resource intensive, but VideoPad really only requires a Windows-compatible sound card and either Windows Vista or 7. Though a dual core processor isn't required, the more power you have available the better.

Video Capture/Playback

When making a video you may want to compile multiple files and files types. Don't worry; you can practically import any multimedia file stored on the computer. For example: AVI, MPEG, WMV, DivX, Xvid, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MP4, MOV, ASF, VOB, OGM, 3GP, H.264 and RM. We were even able to import a video file attached to an email someone sent us during the testing process.
If you are more interested in importing files directly from devices, you can easily import video clips, still images and audio files from devices connected to your computer, such as webcams or TV cards. You can also capture video from any digital camcorder. Importing from a DV camcorder is simply a matter of clicking the Capture button. The same is true for cameras that store footage on a hard disk drive or a media card. VideoPad can also directly import from a VCR or analog camcorder so long as you have the right hardware. This allows you to convert, edit, and burn your precious collection of VHS memories to a digital format.

Ease of Use

Using VideoPad requires little effort. Before even looking at the manual we were able to create a video. The simplicity of the application is enhanced with drag-and-drop functionality. From moving clips to the video and audio tracks or rearranging split clips, all you have to do is drag and drop them where you want them. Other processes not using this functionality are simple too.
Ease of use is perhaps VideoPad’s top selling point. To start a new product, just add the files you want to the media list by either clicking the Add Media button or selecting File then Capture Video. All of the added files are listed in the media list and can be dragged and dropped directly to any track. Once you select a clip it appears in the large clip preview area. The large size makes it simple to move through the clip to find the moment you are looking for.

Editing Tools

The editing capabilities of VideoPad are not as grand as other applications, but they are more than adequate for most situations. Some of the features that are included are video stabilization and split clip. The video stabilization feature is one of the most important features when looking at video editing software. This feature evens out the shaky camera effect. Use the split clip feature to edit the length of individual clips to suit your particular needs. Select the desired clip from the media list to show it in the preview window. Then simply use your mouse to designate exactly where the clip is to begin and end. You can also do chroma key, also known as green screen editing. This gives you the option to merge two clips or images together in a seamless fashion.

Export/Production

One of the biggest reasons to use video editing software is to share your projects with friends and family. VideoPad offers export options in a variety of formats. Not only can you save the file to a disc or your hard drive, but you can also choose to export your movie directly to portable devices including PSP, iPhones and iPods, or other cell phones. You can also upload your video directly to YouTube by clicking that icon. However, since this application is quite simplified, some of the features we expect in video editing software aren't available.
The latest version of VideoPad includes an option for 3D rendering. These two additional features are quite useful in giving your video an extra pizzazz. The application uses stereoscopic conversion to make your 2D video into 3D during the export process. This is a simple process that doesn't require any extra effort on your part. The option for green screen video editing is also a great addition.

Editing Effects/Transitions

The latest version of VideoPad has made some vast improvements in the transitions. Not only do they still have the fade, cross-fade and fade through white. But you can also have wipe, reveal, split, fan, radial, checkerboard and more. The older version of this software didn't have these basic transitions, so we were excited to see they had been added to this latest update.
Not only can you add effects, but you can also crop, rotate, add text or include watermarks to the clips. If you don't want to apply the effect to the entire clip it is a little more difficult. You have to split the clip and then apply a cross-fade to achieve a seamless transition between the clips. If you plan on having multiple segments with various effects this quickly becomes a headache project.
The variable playback speed effect gives you the option of adding slow motion or speeding things up for a time-lapse effect. There is also the option of playing the clip backwards, which can make for some fun movies. The speed which clips play is adjusted by right clicking the clip then adjusting a slide control. If you set it at higher than 100 percent it will speed up the clip, and if you set it lower than 100 that will slow it down. For example, selecting 200 will result in a finished product that plays at double speed while choosing 50 will play at half the original speed.

Disc Creation

With VideoPad, you can choose to burn your completed project to a DVD or Blu-ray Disc. The capability to create a CD or HD-DVD also is available. Video export formats include AVI, WMV, ASF, MPG, 3GP, MP4, MOV and more. We are pleased with the HD options available. You also have a lot of control over the settings of the resolution and frame rate of the video.

Audio and Photo Editing

When you add a video clip to the sequence, the application adds the corresponding video track. You can use the panel to the left of the track sequences to adjust the volume and to add effects. If you want to edit the audio by itself, you can unlink the audio from your video and make changes to the audio track using the audio enhancement tool. You can even set audio in and out points just like you can with video clips.
Sound effects can be added to the audio sequence from the VideoPad audio library. Whether background music or sound effects, they can greatly enhance the professional nature of your movie. Using this feature within the video editing software you can also record a narration for your project.

Help & Support

VideoPad provides customer support via email for those who purchase the video editing software. Since there’s also a free version of the application, they only provide email support for it if you’ve purchased a support package. We believe that purchasing the program is the best alternative since it offers not only support but some additional program features. The manufacturer’s website also contains a FAQs section and a user forum. The user manual is included as part of the program download. It’s available in printed form, along with a backup CD for those who wish to purchase the option.

4. MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus HD

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus HD box shot
If you have ever been, or ever think you might be interested in 3D capable video editing software, you will want to take a look at MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus. Not only can you import 3D material into the application but once it is there you can edit it how you want. You can also use a 3D camcorder, or two camcorders at the same time, to film your own 3D material. So now that you have your 3D material you can just export the files and view the movie on a standard TV with any cyan and red 3D glasses. This is taking the 3D to a whole new level.
Even if you aren't interested in 3D movies MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus offers a lot of features for editing movies in 2D. This includes full HD support whether you are importing or exporting the files. There is a AVCHD import assistant which makes this simple. There are also audio editing features available. You can edit 5.1 surround sound in full Dolby Digital and make a realistic soundtrack. This is also a great way to add sounds for specific speakers to get theater realistic effects in your own home.
It is the nature of video editing software to require a lot of computer resources and there are tremendous improvements in processing speed with MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus. This release is more efficient in importing video files, editing them and rendering the final product. This makes MAGIX one of the most capable and user-friendly video editing software applications available today.

Video Capture/Playback

Like other video editing software, just about any kind of video file can be imported into MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus for editing and output. We’ll talk about that more a bit later. But the big draw for this application is in working with innovative filming that you do yourself.
You can take high-definition video footage with your AVCHD camcorder and import it directly into MAGIX Movie Edit Pro without the need for complicated recalculations. Full HD up to 1080p is supported. You can even use footage that was taken at 50p, offering twice the normal number of frames for super-smooth fast-action sequences.
Beyond editing 3D content, and probably even more practical for most consumers, is the ability to shoot the same event with two different cameras and edit them into a single, professional looking movie. This process, called MultiCam editing, or A/B editing by the pros, allows for the filming of a single event from two completely different perspectives. You could film a concert with close-ups of the performer with one camera and the broader perspective of the whole stage and audience with another. MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus makes putting them together seamlessly very simple. The same process could easily take your home movies of weddings, the kids’ sporting events and such to a whole new level.
For those looking to edit imported files, just about any file type is compatible with this video editing software. They include AVI, DV-AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MTS, M2TS, MXV, MJPEG, QuickTime, WMV(HD) and MKV. You can also capture footage from those old VHS tapes or TV. You can even capture videos from the internet by simply framing them then starting the record function.
MAGIX video editing software allows you to view your finished product on any number of devices, including many smartphones and devices like the iPod Touch. Viewing in 3D can be accomplished using the anaglyph method on standard televisions and monitors by using glasses with one red and one cyan lens. A basic pair is included with the boxed version of the application but not with the download. Additional glasses can be purchased from the manufacturer or other sources. 3D can also be viewed using polarized filter glasses and a special monitor.

Ease of Use

With video editing software, ease of use is a comparative measure. We’re not going to tell you that using MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus is as easy as using as a word processing program or playing a video game, but given the complexity and formidable capabilities of the application, it is relatively simple, logical and intuitive. The manufacturer has clearly made a strong effort in this regard with the addition of a new user interface that allows the consumer to move, adjust or even remove elements from it as desired. Special effects are also centralized in a screen called the Media Pool. It allows for the selection of a category of effect then shows all options in the group without opening a separate window. Audio dubbing has been automated but can be adjusted on a detailed panel and level display screen. Finally, exporting finished work is made easy with the use of a handy export assistant.

Editing Tools

One of the most frustrating things about video editing software is its tendency to hog system resources, and it's infuriating when you've spent hours on a video only to have it crash your computer right before you were about to save your project. Many programming improvements have been made which make the most of your computer’s capabilities. Chief among them is called AVCHD SmartRendering which limits the resource-hungry recalculations to portions of video that have actually been edited. Unedited portions are completed without having to waste excessive computer resources. MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus works with both 32- and 64-bit operating systems but has been optimized for the 64-bit versions, making more RAM available.
While we’re on the topic of computer system optimization, it would be useful to mention the system requirements which are fairly substantial, even for video editing software. Standard operation requires an Intel Core Duo processor running at 1.83GHz or an AMD Dual-Core chip running at 2.0GHz. At least 1GB of RAM is required, as is 1GB of available hard drive space. For high-definition editing, including AVCHD, the requirements are substantially higher. The minimum processor is an Intel Core 2 quad running at 2.83GHz, though an i7 processor is recommended. 4GB of RAM are required as is a 512MB graphics card.
The new user interface makes editing more intuitive than ever with an easy-to-use storyboard and timeline layouts. The application allows you to split, divide, crop and trim scenes. It can configure video for wide screens and has video-correction tools such as stabilizers, filters and color and contrast adjustment abilities. Both primary and secondary colors can be easily adjusted to improve realism or to achieve special, creative results. There’s now a feature known as Intelligent Mouse which allows for moving an entire project behind a video object on a single track or up to the full 99-track limit allowed by this video editing software.
Of course, it also has realtime previews, so you can see your added effects right away and quickly decide whether you want to keep your edits or not.

Export/Production

Movie Edit Pro video editing software can export most popular file types and is compatible with pretty much all online services, such as YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video and Metacafe. Indeed, you can upload to YouTube in full 1080p HD and 3D directly from the MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus application. Videos can also be uploaded directly to Facebook without having to use inconvenient, intermediary video portals. The same can be said for uploading to the premium Vimeo video site.
Videos can be transferred to portable video players and mobile phones. They can also be exported in just about all popular types including AVI, DV-AVI, MJPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, QuickTime and WMV(HD).

Editing Effects/Transitions

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 HD provides a huge array of special effects and transitions to make your videos look their best. Indeed there are over 1,000 different effects, fades and title templates within this video editing software. There’s a large library of background music and sound effects that can be added to any production. You can even use picture-in-picture effects or place any on any background using the green screen, or chroma keying, capability.
There’s also a wide array of titles and text that can be added to your videos. They can be made in 3D and have numerous effects added to them, such as rotating, glowing or tipping. The travel route animation feature is particularly well suited for use with travel videos. You can simply input your travel mode and some route information to get a map added to the video, just like you might see in a travel documentary. Route information is even kept up-to-date with the addition of an internet connection.

Disc Creation

The export assistant screen allows you to export your complete project any way you like. You can choose to save to a computer file, export to a mobile device or upload to the internet. MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 HD allows you to burn your completed projects, including those in 3D, to DVD and Blu-ray discs. Using this video editing software discs can be created with 3D, animated menus.

Audio and Photo Editing

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 HD includes their updated audio app called Music Editor 3.0. It features an integrated Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator so your soundtrack can be as impressive as the video. It can be used to provide great, realistic musical performances or to create theater-like effects by directing particular sounds to specific speakers to create special effects, like the sense of movement. Beyond making great sound, it can be used to remove unwanted noises and defects.
Most video editing tools are also available for still images. You can crop, resize, rotate and position images, and correct color, contrast and brightness. You can even capture a video frame and convert it to an image file. MAGIX also offers animated and non-animated GIF graphics online that can easily be downloaded and added to your video projects within this video editing software.

Help & Support

MAGIX offers customer and technical support online, but you need a user account to take advantage of it. Telephone and email assistance are also available. The MAGIX Multimedia Community is particularly helpful. It allows users to get advice from other users about this video editing software. You can even upload your video and get constructive tips from other users.

Summary

MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 17 HD is exceptional video editing software with some features that make it a real stand-out. The manufacturer’s dedication to being the best can easily be seen in the progress that has been made from the previous edition to the current release. With its unique 3D capabilities, it is particularly well suited to enthusiasts who aren’t satisfied with the status quo but are interested in taking their video projects to all new heights.

3. Adobe Premiere Elements 9

Adobe Premiere Elements 9 box shot
Adobe Premiere Elements 9 continues the tradition of great Adobe products you know you can trust and earns the TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award. Some people may consider this video editing software to be less than its counterpart Premier Pro CS5 but the true difference between the programs is not the features available or the overall versatility of the application but the intended audience. Adobe Premiere Elements is a powerful program that is geared for anyone one to use with little difficulty. Now you can make videos like a pro and not feel bogged down by complex programs that take hours upon hours to master.
If you already own a version of this application you may be wondering if it is worth upgrading it. The answer to that question is a resounding yes. While the latest version of the product doesn't have radical changes to it, Adobe has improved the features in a way you will be wondering what took you so long to make the change. There is also great news for those of you who use Mac. This application is now available for you, too.
This application offers you the ability to import video and files directly from the source. You don't have to work in the extra step of transferring the files to your hard drive and then into the application. So long as you have the right hardware, you can import files from ultra-portable camcorders, DSLR digital cameras, webcams and even cell phones. This saves time and reduces the risk of losing the files somewhere in the vast space of your computer's memory.
Export options have also been enhanced to stay right in step with the burgeoning popularity of online video sharing. While the previous release of Adobe Premiere Elements afforded the capability of uploading directly to YouTube, Elements 9 also permits rather simple uploads to Facebook as well. We’re particularly fond of the new option to create web DVDs. With this feature of video editing software, the user is able to create menus and add soundtracks to uploaded videos just like on a physical DVD. Even better though, these videos can be created and uploaded in full HD while a DVD is limited to standard definition video.
Adobe Premiere Elements 9 video editing software has numerous improved options to enhance your ability to make sophisticated videos. Upgraded functionality allows you to fix imperfections in the audio track as well as the video. Many automated features are available so that the program can be easily used by newcomers to the world of video editing software, but they can be overridden and enhanced to satisfy the creativity requirements of more advanced users.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 are available together in a value priced bundle. They share files from the same Elements Organizer application, so they work especially well together.

Video Capture/Playback

The Adobe Premiere Elements 9 video editing software comes packaged with Elements Organizer, a separate media management hub application which houses all your video clips and still images. Once in Elements Organizer, the files are available for use by Photoshop Elements as well. Those who edit both video and still images will likely find this shared application of great value. The application comes complete with 2GB of free online storage. That can be upgraded to 20GB for an additional charge.
Within Elements Organizer, there are four tabs that allow you to access most critical functions. The Organize tab allows for sorting, tagging and searching of clips and photos as well as protecting them with automatic online backup. The Fix tab provides easy-to-use but effective editing features. Create is where you can make InstantMovies, which we discuss in the Ease of Use section of this review. It also allows you to create slide shows and print creations. Finally, the Share tab is the key to uploading to the internet in a variety of ways.
Elements Organizer is integral to using both Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Photoshop Elements. The shared data makes the two applications work seamlessly together. Nonetheless, it can be a bit confusing in that some functions that seem to belong in the Premiere Elements application are actually part of Organizer and the two must be run simultaneously. It’s mainly a matter of getting used to the division of labor, but we think that a more user-friendly solution is attainable.
A wide array of import and export file formats are usable with this video editing software. Most significant among them are AVCHD (import only), Blu-ray Disc (export only), DV-AVI (import/export on Windows, import only on Mac OS), DVD, Dolby Digital Stereo, H.264, HDV, MPEG-1 (import only), MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MP3, QuickTime and Windows Media (Windows only). It is also compatible with many other formats.
Adobe claims Premiere Elements 9 can support up to 99 video tracks and 99 audio tracks, but we found that this actually sells the application short. There’s nothing that prevents adding tracks 100, 101, 102, etc. Indeed, if there really is a limit, we couldn’t find it. Consumers aren’t likely to ever approach that many tracks, but it appears the maximum number is only limited by your computer’s hardware.

Ease of Use

Adobe Premiere Elements 9 is amazing in its many capabilities. It offers options that only the pros had available to them a very short time ago. The only notable downside to this video editing software is that it’s a bit complicated to use, despite great progress by the manufacturer to make it user-friendly.
Using Adobe Premiere Elements, tagging clips is a key to managing the video editing process. You can tag clips into categories such as people, places, travel, events or any term that is meaningful to you. They’re stored that way in Elements Organizer to help in retrieving them when needed. Smart tagging makes the process even easier and works automatically when clips are imported. Beyond categorizing clips by subject, it includes an Auto-Analyzer function which sorts clips by quality based on criteria including lighting, contrast, audio, motion and more. You can select one or more criteria to find clips that meet your specific needs.
Among the best ease of use features that we’ve encountered with video editing software is Adobe’s InstantMovie. When selected, it searches for the best clips based on user-specified Smart Tag criteria like quality and subject. InstantMovie can place clips in the correct order based on your script and eliminate clips that don’t meet the quality you’ve specified. The program coordinates music, transitions, titles and effects. It includes a number of themes to get you started and will even add a scene index. All in all, it’s a great way to get started with video editing and can provide the foundation for more advanced editing as you learn by experience.

Editing Tools

After you have imported your video project, Premiere Elements 9 lets you choose to view it in either a timeline or storyboard format. In a timeline view you will see the project displayed as a vertically stacked arrangement of video and audio tracks, whereas a storyboard (or sceneline) is a series of images that represents each clip in a project. Regardless of which view you choose for your projects, you will have access to a variety of editing tools including split/trim, text tools, video stabilization and color correction.

Almost everything in this video editing software supports the drag and drop feature. This allows you to do everything from importing video and audio tracks, apply transitions and effects, clipping and trimming, and even publish your project, all from the main user interface.

Beyond that, there are automatic options to fix imperfections. Camera shake, lighting and color problems can all be remedied with the SmartFix feature. Smart Trim can help in deciding what to keep and what to cut out of your movie by making suggestions based on your criteria. If you usually accept the recommendations, you can choose to make the video editing software simply accept them by default.

Export/Production

These days, everybody wants to share their video masterpieces online. Adobe Premiere Elements 9 makes it easy to upload your creation to YouTube or Facebook. Videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube from the Premiere Elements. In a bit of a twist, Facebook uploads must be done from the Elements Organizer application. It’s not a problem just something to keep in mind.
Perhaps the best way to share a video online is to create a web DVD and upload it to Photoshop.com or your own website. In this way, you can create a virtual, interactive DVD complete with menus, scene indexes and chapters. It’s a great way to share, and you can do it in full 1080p HD.

Editing Effects/Transitions

Premiere Elements video editing software comes loaded with a large selection of effects and transitions. Motion Tracking allows you to attach images and effects to specific portions of a clip. For example, you can highlight the area surrounding a person’s head and insert an animated butterfly. The software will then track the highlighted area throughout the clip making it appear as though the animated butterfly is following the person in your video. This can also be used to insert thought clouds, blurred objects and other fun effects.

This video editing software supports green screen, or Chroma Key, editing. Adobe calls it Videomerge. Though blue and green backgrounds are most commonly used, any solid color background can be used as long as it isn’t close to flesh tone or the color of the subject's clothing. With it, the person being filmed can be placed in front of any background. Just for fun, Adobe Premiere Elements 9 has added a cartoon mode which can instantly make your live action video appear as an animated cartoon. Various filters can be applied to create the cartoon look that suits your specific desires.

Disc Creation

With Adobe Premiere Elements 9, you can burn your completed movies to DVD or Blu-ray discs. The application includes disc creation options including menu templates, menu customization, chapter separation and audio tracks for the menu screen.

Audio and Photo Editing

Adobe Premiere Elements 9 has six new functions for fixing audio problems. They include audio polish, auto mute, cleaner, hum remover, noise fader and noise reducer. We found the audio polish option to make the greatest improvements, and while there are default settings for each, we seemed to have better luck by tweaking the setting to obtain the best results. Track mixing, trimming, cross-fading and even 5.1 surround sound support are also available using this video editing software application.

Help & Support

Support for Adobe Premiere Elements 9 is available by telephone or email. The manufacturer’s website features several helpful tutorials on a variety of subjects like getting started, importing and exporting files, customizing themes and capturing video. There’s also a searchable FAQs section for this video editing software.

Summary

It’s hard to beat Adobe Premiere Elements 9 video editing software, whether you’re new to the subject or are an accomplished prosumer. It offers a great balance of automated and manual editing tools which make it easy for those who need it and foster ultimate creativity and control for those who want it. Combine this with Adobe’s Photoshop Elements 9 and you’ll have a complete media editing system.

2. Corel VideoStudio Pro X4

Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 box shot
With the release of Corel VideoStudio Pro X4, we are pleased to see another batch of improvements in an already great video editing software application. Now included in this application is a flexible workspace, enhanced timelines, stop motion animation, time-lapse animation, DVD authoring and 3D capabilities. This product is the TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner for a very good reason. As we tested this application we noticed how easy it was to find what we were lucking for, especially since you determine how everything looks. You no longer have to search through countless menus and dialog boxes to get the result you want. You won't be disappointed with this application and everything it has to offer.

Video Capture/Playback

Video playback is smooth and utilizes VideoStudio’s Smart Proxy technology. You can enjoy the high-performance video editing workstation benefits even if you don’t have a high-end machine. Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 requires fewer system resources, which results in faster, smoother playback and video editing. This is especially helpful when editing standard definition video, not to mention the beneficial effects on editing HD video, which is much more resource intensive. Corel implemented NVIDIA CUDA and GPU acceleration and second-generation Intel Core optimization to ensure this video editing software application ran quicker and smoother.

Ease of Use

It's easy right from the get-go to start using Corel VideoStudio Pro X4. Corel changed the interface for this video editing software application to ensure it never is an obstacle in the process. Not only are common editing tools easily accessible but the workspace is flexible. We were especially pleased to see we were able to utilize dual monitors so you can rearrange all the windows how you want. This streamlined interface simplifies the workflow during the editing process. The library and the timeline are both enhanced for this version. Not only is everything neatly organized but it is simple to find the information you are looking for. The timeline makes it that much easier to apply transitions, titles and filters to the various tracks.

Editing Tools

There are a lot of different options for viewing your files such as timeline or storyboard mode, which are useful for adding video, picture, text, audio, and music tracks. You can also trim or split your video into sections for better continuity, adding transitions and enhancing with effects with this video editing software.
Once you have uploaded your video you will want to trim and divide the video segment into clips. Trimming is marking the beginning and end of an entire clip, while multi-trimming is useful to divide one segment into multiple clips. Multi-trimming is extremely useful when you need to remove a scene or mark it for inclusion in a blooper reel. We found Corel VideoStudio Pro X4's trim and multi-trim tools both powerful and easy to use. It’s important to note that the video editing software application utilizes non-destructive editing, so no matter what you do to a video segment, the original is never cut or overwritten. When the application was finished trimming, the results were impressive; many of what we termed “non productive” segments were trimmed down and made individual scenes that we could move or delete.
Now you can make quick edits or combine video clips, photos, music and voiceover clips to create the perfect project. If you need to finish a project in a short amount of time, this option is one we recommend. Smart Proxy editing allows you to edit HD content just as easily as standard-def because the video editing software application uses fewer resources to focus on the editing process. This application has batch editing, which makes modifying a group of files easy.

Export/Production

Once your edits are complete, you can export your work to a number of formats. Standard formats include FLV files for YouTube, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, AVCHD, WMV HD, RealMedia, Windows Media and QuickTime. The newest version of this video editing software gives you the option of exporting 2D into 3D. This features is a great way to make your videos even more eye-popping. You also have the option to upload your work to Vimeo, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.

Editing Effects/Transitions

New to this version are the stop motion animation and time-lapse effects. With stop motion, you can make animated movies of toys or objects with just a series of photographs. This is a great way to bring memories to life even if you didn’t have a video camera. The time-lapse effect creates a unique effect from footage. All the application does is removes a few of the frames and speeds up the video. This is a useful effect if you have video and want to show progression, such as a flower growing or the stars moving.

Disc Creation

When you create a disc you choose whether or not to include menus. These menus include selecting from a list of videos and selecting chapters within the videos. Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 comes with several different menu templates, and if you don’t like any of them you can create your own. If you don’t want to manually select chapters, VideoStudio will automatically detect scenes and make them into chapters for you. Creating a final disc is easy with the amount of options this video editing software application gives the video enthusiast. You can burn onto a DVD, Video CD or Blu-ray Disc.

Audio and Photo Editing

You can add audio files to your projects in Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 a number of different ways. This includes adding audio files to the library from your hard drive, ripping music from a CD, recording a voiceover clip or using SmartSound Quicktracks. You can add audio files to the library by clicking on the folder icon in the library panel. This video editing software application allows you to record voiceovers with a single click.
You can insert background music into your project with this video editing software from your hard drive or an audio CD. SmartSound Quicktracks allows you to create high-quality soundtracks from royalty-free music. Once you’ve determined which audio clips you want, you can adjust their volume, trim and cut their lengths, stretch their duration, make them fade in or out, use the surround sound mixer, adjust their stereo channels or apply audio filters to them.
Not only is it easy to tweak the music but with Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 you can import photos from a number of different formats to create a photo slideshow or customized menus. You can add a text overlay to any image and extract them from a number of different videos.

Help & Support

Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 comes with solid customer service options. They have a thorough knowledgebase and telephone support until 7 p.m. EST. This application also comes with a printed manual. There are multiple tutorials available for those who need a little more help getting started. Overall, we didn’t have any problems when using Corel VideoStudio Pro X4.

Summary

Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 has everything you could want in video editing software. Not only does it provide great options for editing videos but also the pictures and music that will make your final movie stellar. There’s always a learning curve with video editing software, but Corel makes it less of a headache for first-time users thanks to a flexible workspace.

1. CyberLink PowerDirector 9 Deluxe

CyberLink PowerDirector 9 Deluxe box shot
The TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award for video editing software is the stellar program CyberLink PowerDirector 9. Not only does this application have all the great features you expect in video editing software but it is built with both novice and advanced users in mind. This application uses the hardware of your machine to the fullest extent which gives you the best environment for creating movies that you will want to share with friends and family.
Now you don't have to worry about making your movies look professional. With this video editing software you can make all of your home movies look professionally done without paying someone to do it for you. With all of the new technologies today it is simple to create a lasting impression of your children and share it in a variety of ways just by using this application. Not only can you combine videos taken with your camcorder but add photographs and music for that extra touch and export the whole thing in full HD.
This application doesn't even have the persistent video editing software ailment of being slow. While other products may bog down your machine with all of the demands of running such a large program, PowerDirection came up with a unique solution. The TrueVelocity is a combination of software and hardware techniques that will provide you with a quick and easy experience when using this application. You'll only find this solution in CyberLink products which is why we ranked this product number one.
CyberLink PowerDirector Deluxe incorporates five of the six techniques that make up TrueVelocity. The final, and likely most significant speed factor, native 64-bit processing, is available with the upgraded Cyberlink PowerDirector 9 Ultra video editing software. It’s well worth the small extra investment if your computer is equipped with a 64-bit operating system.
All other aspects of TrueVelocity are incorporated into both versions of CyberLink PowerDirector 9. The TrueVelocity Parallel Engine makes it so all cores and threads of dual and quad core processors are being fully exploited simultaneously for fast video production. This includes a process called general-purpose computation on graphics processing units, GPGPU, which utilizes the computing power of high-end GPUs for purposes other than creating graphics. TrueVelocity Accelerator augments production speed further by allowing for hardware acceleration of video decoding and encoding. Using Direct Memory Access, DMA, content can be moved from video memory to system memory far more efficiently, essentially bypassing the CPU, making it available to accomplish other production chores.
Another facet of TrueVelocity is called FastRender, which saves time by allowing video production without re-encoding an entire video. With it, portions of a video that haven’t been changed don’t have to be decoded then rendered again, the most time-intensive part of the video creation process. An added benefit is that there’s no loss of quality because the result is identical to the source material. UltraSeek further speeds the overall process by using parallel processing to locate and index frames very quickly. It also provides full HD video previewing in real time. Finally, RapidEffect exploits the computing power of the GPU to increase the speed of computer- intensive processes like effects rendering.

Video Capture/Playback

Capturing video using CyberLink Power Director video editing software is a simple matter. The key is the logically designed capture window which can be accessed by clicking the Capture button on the main user interface. You're then set to capture an extensive array of file types from just about any device. Standard and high-definition input file types, from the most common to cutting-edge new formats, include HD MPEG-2, DVR-MS, DV-AVI, DAT, DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VOB, VRO, ASF, WMV, WMV HD, MOV, MOD, MPEG-4, AVC (H.264), TS, MTS, M2TS and WTV (single channel). New to this version of PowerDirector is the ability to capture flash video, or FLV format and MKV, the format that has become preferred for high definition for the internet.
Full HD video can be captured from a HDV camcorder directly to CyberLink PowerDirector. AVCHD capture or importing requires upgrading to the Ultra version. The fully digital format does not require conversion before use on the computer. Similarly, footage from a DV camcorder can be captured without need of conversion. Using the single scene capture mode allows you to transfer a long video segment without skipping sections. Batch capture can be particularly convenient for capturing multiple video clips automatically. You can even transfer the footage from your camcorder directly to a DVD using CyberLink PowerDirector's DV Backup functionality.
Of course, camcorders aren't the only devices that can be used to transfer files to CyberLink PowerDirector video editing software. You can also capture scenes from a webcam, a DVD or even a TV signal. You can also grab audio material to add to your video from a CD or microphone. Regardless of the format or source of the material, it's shown in the Captured Content area and, upon returning to the Edit window, it appears in the Media Room library.

Ease of Use

Most functionality in CyberLink PowerDirector video editing software uses drag-and-drop technology. You can get started by simply dragging clips from the Media Room to the timeline. Adding transitions and effects, trimming and splitting clips, and setting clip duration are all just as easy by dragging them or making selections on a menu.
Easiest of all to use is the Magic Movie Wizard. Even the newest user can easily experience the satisfaction of creating a high-quality movie, complete with edited video blended with professional looking effects and transitions by using this automatic programming. There are a number of other Magic features as well, which serve to make beginners look like seasoned pros or more experienced users look even better. The Magic Fix function can remove shakiness from footage, remove red-eye or enhance the focus of photos. Magic Motion will apply panning and zooming to your videos. It can even be used to animate still photos to make remarkably creative slideshows. You can also use this feature's Magic Motion Designer to manually customize motion. The Magic Cut feature can automatically condense long clips into shorter ones that contain only the highest quality footage. And finally, Magic Style gives you the ability to add pre-designed style templates for a professional look.

Editing Tools

The whole point of video editing software is to enhance raw footage that generally contains unwanted images and ones that are of less-than-desirable quality. CyberLink PowerDirector provides a seemingly endless array of tools to solve these issues to produce a final product that you'll be proud to show and that you're audience will want to watch. Most of this work is done in the drag-and-drop timeline, which allows for reordering clips as desired as well as adding effects and transitions to make the movie look its best. The timeline is also a great creativity tool in that it offers the use of 100 video and 100 audio tracks, far more than most users will ever need.
Splitting a clip is one of the most useful features of this video editing software. You can split a clip as many times as you like and move it wherever you choose on the timeline. You can also trim unwanted portions of video and audio content from your final product. A particularly useful property of trimming is that it doesn't delete anything from your original content, so anything that might be erroneously deleted can be easily redone.
The duration of clips can be modified by simply dragging their beginning or end points on the timeline. TrueTheater video enhancements are available to perform a number of impressive editing tasks. The ability to upscale standard-definition video content to HD quality is among our favorites. You can also enhance image details, naturalize colors and automatically adjust chroma and luminance using the TrueTheater Lighting function. Video noise can be removed from grainy clips and shaky images can be stabilized in real time.
A group of functions called Power Tools is also included as part of this video editing software. They include the ability to play a selected clip in reverse, crop and zoom in on selected portions of a clip, adjust the video speed freeze frame and even rotate the clip within the video.

Export/Production

The explosion in popularity of social networking sites has made sharing videos on the internet extremely popular. Uploading your completed project to either YouTube or Facebook is available at the click of a button with this video editing software. Loading your videos to portable devices like the iPad, iPod or iPhone is also a snap. So too is transferring them to a BlackBerry or many other mobile phones, PSP, Zune or most similar devices.

Editing Effects/Transitions

CyberLink PowerDirector offers a wealth of effects and transitions that can be applied to your video to make it look even more polished and professional. One of the most creative effects – unique to this video editing software – is the Particle Effect function. With it you can be remarkably creative by using a huge selection of dazzling images to trail across your video. You can even direct the path of images for just the right look. Adding picture-in-picture images is a snap, and adding from an enormous library of transitions and titles, including 3D ones, is easily done on the timeline.

Disc Creation

CyberLink PowerDirector 9 makes burning your finished movie to a disc easy. You can choose to burn to single or dual-layer DVDs and, new to this edition of the Deluxe version, you can create Blu-ray discs. Included is the ability to add professional looking title sets and chapter navigation. If you choose to upgrade to the Ultra version, you have the additional option of burning to the new BDXL discs with their enormous 128GB storage capacity.

Audio and Photo Editing

This video editing software takes photo editing to a new level. It includes the ability to import video footage or still images from many DSLR cameras. This includes importing still photos in RAW file format. Once imported to the application, all of the extraordinary editing features are available, including the ability to make slideshows that include 3D and motion effects.
You can edit audio, including 5.1 surround sound, using the integrated WaveEditor. It allows you to adjust volume and pitch, change speed and reduce noise effectively. Audio content can be separated from video for greater flexibility and creative control.

Help & Support

The DirectorZone is one of the most valuable features of CyberLink PowerDirector video editing software. It's an online community that allows users to download more than 100,000 effects, templates and tutorials. Users can upload their completed projects to the site allowing others to see them. Learning from the successes, as well as the shortcomings, of others is facilitated in that viewers can see not only the completed movie but also the project timeline to see exactly what others have done.
CyberLink's website includes a searchable FAQs section, tutorials and downloadable user manuals. Technical support can be contacted by email

Summary

CyberLink PowerDirector 9 Deluxe is our undisputed choice as the best video editing software available for hobbyists and beginning to intermediate users. This edition has new software architecture which makes the program notably faster and more stable than its already impressive predecessors.
